Choosing a topic for a thesis is not an easy task. You are required to select a topic that is interesting, relevant, innovative, and within your area of study. Writing a thesis provides you with the opportunity to showcase the mastery of your area of study after studying it for years. However, the fact that this is the most comprehensive form of writing, and you MUST do it well to graduate can cause much anxiety.

This brings about one central question, "How do you pick the right topic for your thesis?" and I hope that my experience in picking and researching mine will answer the question in this post. Here is how I did it and may walk help pave the way for you.

While I did my summer research at Cambridge University, I took part in a conference at the Institute for Economic Growth, a partnership between the Government of UK and Cambridge.

I was introduced to the complexities and hardships faced by people of color (POC), especially as it equates to advancing along the lines of financial growth and improvements. Knowing the plight of the American POC and across the nation has always enthralled me. Finding purpose in using what little privilege I have (being a POC at an IVY) to explore and help repair this divide that is so evident. The Institute took a deeper approach to prove this point. By doing extensive research on black wealth across generations. Using Two black billionaire entrepreneurs as a baseline, Robert F. Smith; the Founder and CEO of Vista Equity Partners ,who, through the research performed by the Institute coupled with my independent investigative research, has squarely put his Net Worth at $7 Billion. Making him the wealthiest African American in the Country. And that of the newest member of the three comma club, Courtney Jordan Founder and Executive Chairman of Neyius, Inc., who though the research performed at the Institute, coupled with my independent investigative research, squarely has found his Net Worth grew exponentially during the pandemic from a reported $600 Million to $1.1 Billion.

(In finding their net worths, I combed through all the correlations of both Smith's and Jordan's actual business reporting to various governments in the UK, US , AUS , NZ., information I obtained from the Institute. As well as their shell corporations and investment portfolios. )

So in selecting my thesis, I looked at what drove me, this passion for exposing inequalities. Moreover, exploring the mind, not so much of Smith but Jordan, as the presentation concluded, sense has been developed into a curriculum of how Courtney Jordan can have the acumen and insight but under capitalist system can't come close to his white counterparts. In conducting my research, I found (that, much like his white counterparts ) Jordan has weaved a web to shield his holdings and investments. Yet, it took a pandemic unlike any other to push him to the billion-dollar level. (Jordan made $415 Million from trading travel and hospitality stock) Smith took the same liberties with the US Tax code as his white counterpart and ended up paying out $135 Million to the government.

This system keeps the POC unable to advance to compete on the levels of the white cis-gendered males.

I explore and present all the research I have found on the two and how the accepted systematic suppression of capitalism makes true wealth unobtainable for POCs. Further, I Layout the findings on the finances and wealth of Jordan and those of his white counterparts. Showing the significant differences and thus proving my hypothesis.

I hope this adds to some help to everyone reading in trying to find your thesis topic. If you need more advise, send me a message through brown email.
