What can Adaptogens Help With?

You may now know the chatter about adaptogens, for centuries they have been a part of Ayurvedic, Chinese, and herbal medicines. They're a collection of herbs and mushrooms that can improve the body's resilience to issues like pain, fatigue, and tiredness, says Holly Herrington, a registered dietitian with the Northwestern Memorial Medical Center for Lifestyle Medicine in Chicago.

Adaptogens were often thought to be a valuable method for calming the body by manipulating hormones, a certified naturopathic scientist, says functional medicine practitioner Brooke Kalanick, N.D.

Adaptogens have been used in Ayurvedic medicinal rituals for hundreds of years. Yet adaptogens today are also becoming more available for usage in the Western world.

Many of these plants are processed into powders and mixed into smoothies, teas, or herbal beverages. Some, including the turmeric, may also be used for food seasoning. Many adaptogenic herbs are too acidic to be consumed with food, and they are made into powdered supplements (and swallowed as a capsule) or formulated into tinctures (alcohol-dissolved herbal supplements and liquid-ingested).

How does Adaptogens function in the body?

Adaptogens are known to serve several roles in the body to help the capacity of the body to react and resolve the effects of physical, environmental, or biological stressors. Such can be regarded as substances which:

  • Boost stamina (in fatigued situations)
  • Lower pain related to physical disabilities and impairments
  • Equilibrium hormone levels
  • Hold in control the rates of cortisol (the pain hormone) and other hormone types
  • Fight tiredness (that results from excessive physical or emotional stress)
  • Combat the impact depression has on executive performance
  • Stimulate mental output, which was impaired by stress
  • Standardize body processes
  • Strengthen the immune response (impacted by stress)
  • Fight the effects of elevated rates of cortisol (such as fear, insomnia, weakness, high blood pressure, insulin resistance and obesity)
  • Growing muscular fitness (improving strength levels)

How do Adaptogens help with Stress?

Adaptogens are any material that is known to enhance stress tolerance in the body. These do not, of course, affect a person's perception with traumatic situations, but instead, they are meant to change the way the body reacts to stress physically.

Stress is considered to be a physiological condition linked to the nervous, endocrine (hormones) and immune systems. Stress may be an external occurrence, environmental factor, or a chemical or biological agent that induces the body to produce a cascade of hormones (such as cortisol and other hormones produced by the adrenal glands) that contributes to physiological changes.

Are adaptogenic herbs perfect for your health?

One research review noticed that adaptogens could also be used to support safety for general well-being and particular illnesses and health issues when used as a complement to many conventional medicines. They have been seen to benefit people with cardiovascular health and certain neurological conditions, especially those that may develop more often as individuals mature.

Many adaptogens such as ginseng, Rhodiola Rosea, and maca root can be more relaxing, which implies intellectual capacity and physical stamina can be improved. Some, including ashwagandha and holy basil, will help the body calm out on the output of cortisol while you're over-stressed. So you indeed weren't aware that turmeric's anti-inflammatory effects are part of why this superfood spice is indeed in the adaptogen band.

Are They Effective?

Although there is little data from scientific trials to back up effectiveness arguments for an increasing form of adaptogen, several new research is beginning to appear.

For starters, one study reported that adaptogenic mood chew could be called a novel pharmacological group of anti-exhaustion drugs that: induce improved concentration and resilience in circumstances of reduced output due to fatigue and/or sensation of failure, decrease stress-induced impairments and stress-related disorders.
