Cities and Urban Space in the Ancient World

This course investigates ancient cities from a comparative perspective. Using contemporary approaches to cities and the production of urban space, we will explore side-by-side cities of the ancient Near Eastern and Mediterranean world, with comparisons drawn as well from other regions such as Mesoamerica. We will investigate how cities were planned in the past and their monumental architecture shaped, with a special focus on Egyptian case studies such as the productive prehistoric site of Tell el-Daba.
